David McSavage’s Leicester Square Questionnaire

30 May 2024

David McSavage is stand-up comedy's answer to spontaneous human combustion, an explosive and always surprising phenomenon that simply cannot be contained in a box or transposed to TV. We took a moment ahead of his stop with us this June to get his thoughts on the most pressing issues facing comics, and broader civilisation, today.

What’s your most memorable heckle?
At a gig in Sydney Australia, drunk guy threw a bottle of beer at me and missed my head by centimetres.

What is your most controversial food opinion?
I fasted once for five days, eating only apples and water, by the fourth day I was so hungry, while emptying cats litter box I was looking at a little turd thinking “wonder what that tastes like”.

What’s one word to describe the state of the UK?
Exciting

Who’s the best upcoming performer in the country that we haven’t
heard of?
As a 58 year old it would almost be pervy for me to know the answer to that question.

Who would you describe as your arch-nemesis?
Anyone successful.

When was the time you bombed the most onstage?
After a particularly sh*te gig, I was sitting behind curtain listening to audience talking about my show while leaving the venue, one guy said “he was really bad”, and the other guy said “yeah he was beyond awful”.

Like I wasn’t just awful, I was beyond awful, into a realm of awfulness that couldn’t be described.

What’s been your strangest fan encounter?
The worst is when fans actually show up at your door, creepy as f*ck, happened yesterday, drunk guy knocked on my door wanting me to do a video wishing his brother happy happy birthday ffs.

And I did…

How do you like to relax after a gig?
Curl up on couch, rock back and forth (self soothing).

What’s the one thing you want the audience to take away from your
show?
That was great.

What would you tell your five year old self?
Persistence without expectation.

Who would win in a fight: Badger or Baboon?
Baboon would rip a badger apart.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve overheard in London?
Hi.
